Understanding the Impact: What Happens When we Pave the Ground with Plastic

Artificial turf seems like a low-impact solution, but replacing living soil and plants with plastic fiber has consequences that ripple through local ecosystems. Here's what the research and field observation tell us about the context:

Birds and Foraging

Many of our local birds, including towhees, thrushes, and robins, forage in leaf litter and soil. Synthetic turf eliminates this food source entirely.

Heat Island Effect

Artificial turf surface temperatures can exceed 150°F on summer days, far hotter than native groundcovers, posing risks to pets, children, and animals passing through.

Stormwater Runoff

Impermeable or low-permeability turf increases runoff, carrying pollutants into our local streams and the Santa Monica Mountains watershed.

Soil Health

Living soil beneath turf degrades over time without plant interaction. Beneficial fungi, insects, and microbes that support healthy ecosystems disappear.

Chemical Concerns

Some turf products contain PFAS compounds or crumb rubber infill, which can leach into soil and groundwater over time, especially in our warm climate.

End-of-Life Waste

Synthetic turf has a 10–15 year lifespan and is generally non-recyclable. It ends up in landfills, with no good disposal pathway currently available in California.

Drought-Tolerant: California Native Lawn Alternatives

Dune Sedge and Clustered Field Sedge form low, walkable carpets needing little water or mowing once established.

Bird & Mammal Habitat: Native Groundcovers

How to Remove Artificial Turf and Restore your Soil

If you're ready to make the change away from artificial turf, the process is straightforward, and our climate means natives establish quickly with the right start.

1. Plan Your Disposal

Contact your waste hauler in advance. Most standard curbside programs won't accept turf. Some private haulers specialize in it. Check with Ventura County Public Works for current guidance on landfill drop-off options.

2. Remove the Turf and Infill

Cut the turf into manageable rolls for removal. If crumb rubber infill was used, try to capture as much as possible to prevent it from remaining in the soil or washing into storm drains.

3. Assess and Amend the Soil

Soil under old turf is typically compacted and depleted. Aerating and adding compost helps restore structure. Native plants are generally tolerant of poor soil, but a basic amendment gets them started well.

4. Sheet Mulch to Suppress Weeds

Before planting, lay cardboard (wet it first) topped with 3–4 inches of wood chip mulch. This smothers remaining weeds, retains moisture, and feeds soil organisms as it breaks down.

5. Plant in Fall

October through December is the ideal window for planting natives in our valley. Winter rains reduce your irrigation burden and give roots time to establish before summer heat.

6. Water Through the First Two Summers

Most established natives need little to no supplemental water, but new plantings benefit from deep, infrequent watering in their first one to two summers as roots extend.

Many water agencies in Ventura County, including Calleguas Municipal Water District, offer rebates for removing artificial turf and replacing it with water-wise landscaping. Check with your local district before starting, as you may be eligible for significant financial assistance.
