Getting Started as New Birder
Conejo Valley Audubon Society is a local, volunteer-run group that helps people in our community experience and protect birds and the places they live. This page is where to start, no matter your background or experience.
How to Experience Birds
You don't need binoculars, a field guide, or any experience to start. Step outside right now and you'll probably hear one within a minute.
No Gear, No Cost
Experiencing birds doesn't cost anything. You don't need binoculars or specialized equipment to get started. Open your ears, look up, and pay attention to what's already around you: the park near your house, your own backyard, the trees in a parking lot.
If you want a closer look and you're curious about borrowing binoculars, just ask at any of our walks. We usually have extra, and we’re happy to lend them to you.
Bring the Whole Family
Bring your kids. Bring the stroller. Our family walks happen on flat, accessible paths at an easy pace, with no pressure to keep up or stay quiet. Birds are already part of the places your family goes every week.
Join a Beginner Walk
Our beginner walks are free, casual, and led by people who remember what it felt like not to know a hawk from a vulture. Come as you are, ask questions, and don't worry about getting anything "right."
Common Questions
Do I need binoculars?
No. You can see and hear plenty without them. If you want to try a pair, we usually have extra binoculars at walks.
Do I need to know bird names first?
No. You'll pick up names naturally by coming along. Nobody expects you to identify anything on your first walk, or your tenth.
Can I bring my kids? My stroller?
Yes. Our family walks are chosen for flat, stroller-friendly paths and a relaxed pace.
Do I need to be a member to join a walk?
No. All of our beginner walks are free and open to the public. Membership is only for people who want to support our work further.
